About The club
The Garden Club of Nyack
The Garden Club of Nyack was founded in 1912 by Mrs. Joseph Hilton, and is one of the oldest garden clubs in New York State. When the Federated Garden Clubs of New York was organized in 1924, Nyack was a charter member.
The Club meets monthly with programs designed around a theme. There are also trips to public gardens and visits to private ones throughout the gardening season. In 2000, the Garden Club created a lovely Butterfly Habitat by the river in Memorial Park. Members maintain and continue to augment the garden. We also plant and maintain the window boxes at the YMCA. We have a plot in the Nyack Community Garden growing herbs and vegetables for People to People. In coordination with Bluefield Farms, we provide small bouquets to the Meals on Wheels Senior Program.
"Come forth into the light of things. Let Nature be your teacher." --Wordsworth
The club has a long history of contributing to local civic beautification projects, including an early rear garden at the Nyack Library, trees and flowering shrubs at Memorial Park, evergreens in the courtyard of the high school on Fifth Avenue, and plantings at Hopper House and the Old Stone Meeting House. For many years, the club organized an annual Flower Show, a portion of which, highlighted contributions by the students of Upper Nyack Elementary School, in a program designed to introduce children to the joy of working with plants.
With our plant sales, Tri-Annual get-togethers, garden tours, shared reading and expert lectures, the Nyack Garden Club brings people together who appreciate the natural beauty of our region, are devoted to protecting and enhancing that beauty, and have an interest in doing some civic volunteer hands-on gardening work to share that love of beauty with our community.
